What to do in your garden in October

Here are a few jobs to keep on top of as we approach winter:-

  1. Protect your plants – lift half hardy perennials and pot them up and put them in the greenhouse. Lift Dahlia tubers once the foliage is blackened by the first frost, dry them off and store them for next year.
  2. Lift and divide perennials if they have become overcrowded and replant them elsewhere in the garden.
  3. Plant up containers with autumn/winter bedding for a lasting display.
  4. Plant spring bulbs for an explosion of colour next year.
  5. Harvest any vegetable crops for storage over the winter.
  6. Pick green tomatoes and peppers and bring them indoors for ripening. Placing them next to a banana will help with the ripening process.
  7. Pears, apples and nuts are already to harvest and store.
  8. Rake up fallen leaves and put them in a black rubbish sack punctured with holes to create leaf mould.
  9. Net a garden pond to prevent leaf from falling into it.
  10. October is the last chance to mow your lawn and aerate and feed your lawn before next spring.
